For my last school year I had to do an internship.
I went to PowerUp Universe.

PowerUp Universe is a Start up company.
The sectors are education/training/science.
The target group is children from 10 to 12 years old.
PowerUp Universe makes stories, assignments and games for children, through Storytelling. The protagonists of these stories are Niko, Rana and Park.Together they all have adventures with their Kanjodol: Tanomu, Kaisha and Jeonsa.
These stories are especially for children, it is to show that everyone can be themselves with all the defects and backpacks they have.
The aim is to give the children the opportunity to be children again.

The bootcamp
The internship started with a 4 week bootcamp. The intention of this bootcamp was to get to know the story, characters and art style of PowerUp Universe.
Spire: In assignment Spire, I first had to read the 24 chapters of the PowerUp You story. When I was I had to fill in a character sheet for the 3 main characters and 1 Kanjodol of choice.
The intention of the assignment was that I showed I understood the story and characters in it.

Kigen: Somewhat more difficult assignment.
For this assignment I looked at myself.
I had to draw myself in the PowerUp Universe art style, but not idealized.
The assignment was also to draw a Kanjodol. To this came an explanation, with what did my Kanjodol help during my childhood?

P.I.T.A.: The name of this assignment is an abbreviation of Pain In The Ass.
I can guarantee it was! I had to make 8 LoFi face sketches, 6 LoFi body sketches, 3 HiFi full body sketches and 1 complete body (line art, color and shading) of all 12 PowerUp You characters, and a detailed background.

I had 2 weeks to do this. The purpose of this assignment was to quickly get the hang of the PowerUp Universe artstyle.
Out of everything I also made a fun sticker of my favorite character.
Unity: P.I.T.A. I was given an assignment to make social media posts together with Joyce and Faye, two other interns.

With the COCD-box method I chose two stories together with the team.

The COCD box works like this:
You have three colors, blue, red and yellow
BLUE: Not particularly original, but perfectly achievable, short-term results.
RED: Original and doable, you notice a certain appeal, this gives a 'WOW' feeling.YELLOW: Very original but it is not clear (yet) how to implement this, ideas for the future.
We sat down with the group and wrote down all our ideas.
In the end we went to see what was the most achievable in the short period of time we had.
Eventually the team ended up with two ideas:
- The Mysterious Animal
- The cities of Lyonia
Faye, Joyce and I started working on a story called The Mysterious Animal.

Small summary:Faye, Joyce and I have been asked by Professor Kell to search for a mysterious animal that has terrified him.
After two Instagram posts and two YouTube videos, we find out that Quinn, also one of the interns, is the mysterious animal.

Design de Toorts: After the bootcamp I was given a week to make a design for de Toorts.
It had to be a mix of an Irish pub and it had to look futuristic.

After the bootcamp
Vacancies:Together with Joyce, Emma and Mees I started working on the PowerUp Universe vacancies.
On the vacancies you see the 12 characters that appear in the PowerUp You story.
They have an outstretched hand to make you feel welcome.
I drew Astrid and Kaisha.

Infographics: After making the vacancy pictures, I got a small assignment to make infographics for InHolland with the same group, Joyce, Emma, Mees and me.
This assignment lasted 2 to 3 days, I only had to make sketches.

Pixel art game: The last assignment I made was animations for Kaisha.
I made a jump, walk and idle animation for that. The art is in pixels, which was quite different from the art I had made in the past few weeks.
Kaisha looks adorable in pixel art.
During my internship at PowerUp Universe I learned a lot.
 • My sketching has gone from two days to 5 minutes for a character.
• The poses of the characters I draw are more dynamic.
• The shading is harder.
• You can clearly see where the light comes from.
• The “is this good” question was completely removed from my system.
• I have learned to accept more feedback and give it.
The rest of my experience at PowerUp Universe has been really nice!
I had a nice team with whom I could work well, and there were often nice conversations with funny moments.
The Medioren were very helpful when I needed help and also had the same humor as the Junioren.
It was usually a nice and comfy atmosphere, but I always did my job and during the presentations the serious mask was put on, it is still a sirous company!
This experience here has given me great perspective for the future. It has been a tough, but instructive internship.I'm gonna miss it a lot!
